An Autoethnographic Exploration of Impairment, Listening Practice and the Democratisation of Sound

Hearing is passive, while listening is active. I have had a hearing impairment for most of my life, but what I lack in the passive I have learned to somewhat make up for with the active. In the same way as one improves their musical listening to appreciate the discrete elements of a piece, I wondered to what extent my active listening as a coping mechanism led me to always be listening musically. If we accept the view that sound does not exist without the listener, and that sound and music are only separated by the listener, then musical listening creates music from sound. Building upon Pauline Oliveros’ “sonic awareness”, I will therefore be autoethnographically exploring how my own constant active listening is the same as musical listening, democratising sound. Through a series of nine pieces I will demonstrate a variety of techniques that reflect my own listening practice and its wider applications, tracing a path through internal and external sonic universes that encompass the micro and the macro. Following some of the principles of soundscape composition, I will be centring my pieces around capturing sound environments and responding to them musically as an external expression of the internal process of active listening, utilising these environments as the original informers of composition from the bottom up. The goal is to simultaneously evoke active listening, encourage a guided mental state, and demonstrate my own thought process with a focus on a time-distorting understanding of listening that consolidates memory, absorption and anticipation.
